Dennis Bowman visits HTS
KDKA Meteorologist Dennis Bowman visited
our school on Tuesday, January 26, and was given a
warm welcome by our Varsity and JV cheerleaders.
Dennis brought his friends Chester Drawers
and Captain Horatio Herkimer to help explain the various
aspects of the weather and how it is predicted. Dennis
taught and entertained the students with a little
magic, ventriloquism, stories, and a great science
project demonstration. The students learned about
the atmosphere and cold, warm, and stationary fronts,
as well as the safest places to be in the event of
a lightning storm telling the students that
if you can hear thunder you are close enough to be
struck by lightning - When thunder roars
go indoors. Dennis explained the different instruments
that are used to forecast and monitor weather , including
Doppler Effect, barometers, weather balloons and rain
gages. Dennis wrapped up his presentation by simulating
a tornado in his Mean Tornado Machine.
Following the assembly Holy Trinity
presented Mr. Bowman with a check of $50 for the KD
Turkey Fund and a beautifully decorated cake complete
with the 4 seasons.
Thank you Mr. Bowman for an enjoyable
and educational afternoon!
